The EPA recently finalized guidelines concerning controversial surface-mining techniques. The E.P.A. claims the new standards will improve water quality in Appalachian coal country.

Opponents to the guidelines argue that the new guidelines can’t be met by coal companies. The guidelines hinder companies’ ability to get permits in turn hurting coal production and jobs in Eastern Kentucky and Central Appalachia. The industry is currently challenging the EPA stating it’s impossible to meet then new standards and still carry on with production.

Mountaintop removal coal mining has been a heated debate for years. Several local citizens have protested the acts and even been arrested in the name of protecting Appalachian land.
