Handy Block Burchfield, age 77 of Branchland, West Virginia, formerly of Marrowbone Creek, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 in Branchland. Born July 9, 1935 in Mingo County, she was the daughter of the late Lafette Block and Elizabeth Vance Block. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Burchfield {1983}; one son, Willie Burchfield Jr; and three daughters, Janet, Sally and Paula. She is survived by two sons, Lafey Burchfield of Tempe, Arizona and Billy Ray Burchfield of Laketon, Indiana; three daughters, Patty Sanders of Branchland, WV, Peggy Miller of Oceana, WV and Phyllis Jean Burchfield of Logan, WV; five brothers, Lafe and Robert Block both of Branchland, WV, Jack Block of Crum, WV, Charley Block of Louisiana, and Giddeon Block of Kiseville, WV; two sisters, Jessie Finnley of Branchland, WV, and Martha (Granny) Block of Louisa, KY; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and a slew of nieces and nephews. Handy was a member of Sheltering Freewill Baptist Church in Branchland.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Thursday, July 4, 2013 at the Jennies Creek Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Hodge Cemetery on Jennies Creek. Russell Messer will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 1pm Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.
