He was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Elizabeth Jude Varney; 4 brothers; Jennings, Ed, Raymond and Charles Varney; and one sister, Dorothy Varney Pinson.
He was survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Janith Carol Chaffin Varney; three loving and dedicated sons, John Harlen (Sara) Varney of Lenore, Mathew Neal (Misty) Varney of Sprigg, Jeffrey Alexander (Traci) Varney of Lenore; 6 adored and cherished grandchildren, Erin Nicole (Karl) Charles, Cody Lee and Ethan Varney, Wyatt Alevander Varney, Mason Dean and Elijah Cole Varney; brothers Paul Eugene (Madge) Varney of Spencer; three sisters; Mary Hatfield of Wheeling, Wanda Wells of Dayton, OH, and Irene Marcum of Wilkinson; beloved Mother-in-law, Pricey Chaffin of Kermit; and a host of loving and caring family and friends.
He was an assistant pastor at the Little Dove United Baptist Church for 13 years. He served his country as a member in the United States Army. He was a retired employee of the Appalachian Power Company, a boy scout leader, and a youth baseball and basketball coach.
He was a loved and respected member of the community and will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be held at 6PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Little Dove United Baptist Church at Belo, WV with the Reverend Curtis Booth officiating.
Funeral service will be Thursday, August 22nd at 1PM at the church with Pastor Jimmy Maynard officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky.
